Irritable
bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder of the intestines.
It can cause crampy pain, gassiness, bloating, and changes in
bowel habits. Though it can be very uncomfortable and even disabling,
IBS is not an inflammatory disorder and should not be confused
with colitis, mucous colitis, spastic colon, spastic bowel, functional
bowel disease, and other serious inflammatory
conditions.
This short
but informative fact sheet from the National Digestive Diseases
Information Clearinghouse (NIDDK) includes definitions, causes,
symptoms, diagnosis, diet, medications, links to other diseases,
and additional readings. NIDDK also has a separate fact sheet
on Irritable
Bowel Syndrome in Children.
This article
from the Food & Drug Administration provides different perspectives
on IBS. The section on "What Makes Irritable Bowel Syndrome
(IBS) Different [from similar disorders]?" is clear and
concise.
Developed
by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), this section
of the AAFP website provides basic information about IBS and
suggestions relating to fiber, food, milk, stress, medication,
and other factors relating to IBS symptoms. A Spanish
edition is available.
The website
of this nonprofit organization provides links to a self-help
group, webcasts, meetings, books, clinical studies, and other
Internet resources. Many of them are simply links to about.com
pages. There is also a relatively new series of forums about
various aspects of IBS.
