Articles from the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) website cover choosing a good nursing home, continuing care retirement communities, admission contracts, Medicaid and paying for nursing home care, Medicare hospice benefits, resolving problems, and residents' rights.
 
[bullet] American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AASHA)
AAHSA is a membership organization representing nonprofit nursing homes, continuing care retirement communities, senior housing facilities, assisted living and community services. While its website is geared primarily to these institutions, the consumer section features useful tips on choosing facilities and services, a searchable directory of AAHSA members, and more.
 
[bullet] American Health Care Association (AHCA)
AHCA "is a federation of 50 state health organizations, together representing nearly 12,000 non-profit and for-profit assisted living, nursing facility, long term care, and subacute care providers that care for more than one million elderly and disabled individuals nationally." Geared primarily for professionals, its website includes long term care news, research, and related information. There is also an excellent consumer information section.
 
[bullet] Medicare - Nursing Homes[starred entry]
This section of the Medicare website provides visitors information relating to Medicaid and Medicare certified nursing homes in the U.S. It includes Nursing Home Compare, an online and downloadable database that provides information about every Medicare and Medicaid certified nursing home in the country; information on payment and patient rights; a nursing home evaluation checklist; and more.

An excellent article from Consumer Reports. Consumer Reports also offers a Nursing Home Watch List by state based on recent state inspections.
