Lupus is a rheumatic or autoimmune disease that involves chronic inflammation of the joints, muscles, or other parts of the body. The majority of people with lupus have Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), which affects multiple organs in their body.

Living with Lupus: The homepage of the Lupus Foundation of America, this extensive website includes information about causes, symptoms, testing, and treatment; commonly asked questions ("current information"); and a research and resource section. The "Health Forum" lists alternate web sites where people with lupus can communicate with others. There is also a chapter listing and an events calendar.

Living with Lupus: Geared for parents, this well-written KidsHealth site explains what lupus is, what causes it, types and variations, diagnosis, living with lupus, when to call the doctor, and the future. KidsHealth also offers a lupus site specifically for teens.

Lupus: A Patient Care Guide for Nurses and Other Health Professionals: This extensive online book from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) covers symptoms and diagnosis, lab tests for diagnosis and evaluation, lupus medications, psychosocial aspects, advances in lupus research, lupus information resources, and nursing procedures for major
lupus complications. The section on patient information includes hand-out sheets on a wide variety of topics.

Lupus Around the World: This site includes informational articles about medications, lab tests, symptoms, medical terminology; support through personal stories, buddies, and real-time chat; and a wide variety of topical forums that range from pediatric lupus to caregivers. Its lupus links page is one of the most comprehensive that we've seen.

Lupus Center: Part of the Colorado Health Site, the Lupus Center includes definitions, facts, and statistics; treatment centers; treatment and research developments; medications; support services and resources; an active interactive forum; inspirational stories; links to books, articles, and websites; an "ask the professional" section; questions and answers; and more.

Lupus/Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE): This fact sheet from the Arthritis Foundation provides an overview of lupus symptoms, causes, diagnosis, treatment, risk factors, and resources.
