Neuromuscular Disorders

There are over 200 neuromuscular diseases; some of these are acquired, while others are hereditary. Among the more common neuromuscular disorders are muscular dystrophies, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, spinal muscular atrophy, Charcot-Marie-Tooth, myasthenia gravis, and polio. Neuromuscular disorders may be characterized by weakness, atrophy and fatigue of skeletal muscle, limb contractures, spinal deformity, restrictive lung disease, cardiac dysfunction, and cognitive impairments. These sites look at neuromuscular disease from the broad perspective, often including specific information about individual diseases.
Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA)
Although most commonly associated with muscular dystrophy, the MDA focuses on about 40 different neuromuscular disorders. Its website includes fact sheets about each of these diseases, news, online versions of MDA’s Quest Magazine and The ALS Newsletter, an opportunity to “Ask the Experts at MDA” about current research developments and medical management of neuromuscular conditions, information about the organization’s research, services, clinics, and more. When we last checked, there was a newly added Spanish section and an online “chat.”
Neuromuscular Disease Center (Washington University School of Medicine)
This extensive (and very technical) site from the Washington University School of Medicine offers information about specific disorders, evaluation, testing, trials, links, and more.
REHABinfo Network
REHABinfo Network is the home of the Rehabilitation Research & Training Center in Neuromuscular Diseases at the UC Davis School of Medicine. In addition to information about the Center, this well-organized website provides links to the following services and topics: Neuromuscular Disease Information Center, DrugInfo Database, Signs & Symptoms of Neuromuscular Disease, Find Medical and Rehabilitation Services, Gene Testing, News and Alerts, Tools for Daily Living, a Reading Room, and NMD Associations.
