You might think that we book reviewers get all the books we read and critique in the mail, hot off the presses and directly from publishers. Well, usually, but not always. Sometimes, the best books seem to fall into our laps, so to speak, while we go about our daily routine. One Bite At A Time: Nourishing Recipes For People With Cancer, Survivors, And Their Caregivers by Rebecca Katz et al. is such an example.

While listening to a cooking show on my local National Public Radio station, I was intrigued by the topic announced by the chef host: cooking for people with cancer. As he began the interview with San Francisco-based organic cooking instructor Rebecca Katz, I became even more intrigued. The discussion that ensued about Katz's cooking guide for cancer patients, One Bite At A Time, piqued my reviewer's interest as well as my taste buds.

In this thoughtful and comprehensive recipe book, Katz offers her insights for making simple, wholesome food interesting and palatable for people with cancer. She describes how enhancing foods with easy techniques and ready ingredients can stimulate appetites and boost immune systems for individuals undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, and other medical interventions. Mindful of the needs of caretakers and the ongoing concerns of cancer survivors, Katz also includes them in her book filled with mouth-watering recipes, advice, and anecdotal information.

I wish I had had a book like One Bite At A Time when my father had kidney cancer since food, something he had always loved, held little interest for him in his final months. If cancer touches your life in any way, pick up a copy of Katz's book -- and get cooking!
