Animals In Translation: Using The Mysteries Of Autism To Decode Animal Behavior
by Temple Grandin and Catherine Johnson.
Scribner, 2005. Hardcover, 356 pp., $25.00.

Although I first came into contact with Temple Grandin's story of living with autism about twenty years ago while I was studying sensory integration in occupational therapy courses, this professor and animal scientist did not become well-known to the general reading public until Talking In Pictures hit the best-seller list a few years ago. Now, Grandin has returned with Animals In Translation: Using The Mysteries Of Autism To Decode Animal Behavior, a fascinating journey into the overlapping worlds of animal behavior and autism.

Grandin, an international authority on animal management in the livestock and cattle industries, provides an overview of her life with autism and explores how she believes the thought patterns and perceptions of people with autism are similar to those of animals. Uniquely posed to present these observations, Dr. Grandin draws correlations between two seemingly diverse worlds and helps acquaint her readers with both of them. Absorbing!
