Working Like Dogs: The Service Dog Guidebook
by Marcie Davis and Melissa Bunnell
Alpine Publications, 2007. Softcover, 116 pages, $24.95.

As a book reviewer specializing in animals and in disability issues, I come across lots of books that combine both topics. However, Working Like Dogs, an excellent overview of the service dog partnership, goes beyond an intersection of subject matters; it goes right to my heart since there are two working Labrador retrievers in my home. A few months ago, a sweet and intuitive yellow Lab named Greta became my second guide dog, while my husband was matched with his first service dog, smart and confident Pumpkin, last month.

This manual, written by a service dog handler and a crisis counselor, is an excellent overview of the service dog partnership. From making the decision to apply for a dog through daily care and behavior to retirement issues, Davis and Bunnell examine this unique human-canine bond. Their work will be of interest to prospective and current service dog handlers, puppyraisers, and anyone simply wanting to learn the ins and outs of service dog teams.
