Fall Guy
by Carol Lea Benjamin
Avon, 2005. Softcover, 384 pages, $6.99

OK, let’s be honest. Summer is here, and we could all use a little rest and relaxation, be it on the beach or on the patio. If you, like me, always include reading in that “r and r”, here’s a book that should be high on your summer reading list. Although Fall Guy, the latest installment in the excellent mystery series featuring Greenwich Village private investigator Rachel Alexander and her rescued pit bull Dashiell, might not seem to be disability-related, there are some good reasons why Disability Resources users will want to pick up this engrossing tale of a police officer’s suspected suicide.

The first is Dashiell himself. The book opens with Rachel and her dog doing a pet therapy visit to a group of elderly patients. In addition to helping the protagonist in her detective work, Dashiell is a regular animal-assisted therapy volunteer. More intriguing, however, is the fact that Carol Lea Benjamin is herself a service dog handler; a visit to her website at www.carolleabenjamin.com provides background on her own service dog partnership.
